This unit comes with a foot pedal, headset, and a transcription software program. Over the past years, transcription used to be done using a desktop transcriber. This allowed the transcriptionist to put a tape into the unit and using a foot pedal, then control the play, rewind, and fast forward functions with her foot thus never having to take her hands off of the keyboard.
Today, technology has changed and most dictation is done by digital means. That is, transcription service companies or doctors themselves use either call-in systems or digital hand-held recorders. This method of dictation then produces a digital file or .wav file. These files are uploaded to employer servers or sent directly to your email. You can then access them by connecting to the Internet and using a transfer file program you can download them directly into your computer. The dictation files can then be opened using your transcription software program and just as with the desktop, a foot pedal connected to your computer allows you to control all the functions. This unit is also equipped with what they call an autobackspace setting. What this does is prevent you from losing your place while transcribing. You can lift your foot off of the play pedal and the dictation will then back up as many words as you set it to. Like the desktop transcribers, these computer based units also come equipped with speed and volume controls.
Approximately 95% of all at home employers use this type of technology for their transcriptionists, so it is most important for you to have training on this type of equipment and for the purpose of the course study, we have transferred digital dictation files directly onto CDs for the traditional course or downloadable audio files from the Internet study site for online students so you can access them with your digital transcriber and gain the experience with using this equipment thus making you that much more prepared to enter directly into the profession as an at home transcriptionist.
